Travelling directly from Moscow to Beijing along the Trans Siberian Railway can only take around a week, but if time is not an issue for you, then consider planning to explore the awesome places along the route. It may take at least 10 days or so if you make a 3-day stay in a stopover, and even more than 2 weeks if you want to explore 2 or more places along the way. Besides, your China holiday will only be a part of your entire adventure. What matter most are the stories you make on your trip to China i.e. your stopovers in Siberia and Mongolia, among others.

But where should you plan to make your stops? Here are some ideas in no particular order.

Irkutsk, Russia

If you're more of an urban adventurer, you won't have to worry staying here because it's one of the largest Siberian cities. The best part is that the historical centre is just walkable, but you can also rent a bicycle if you want. The City History Museum of Irkutsk is a great place to start when you want to learn more about the city. Alternatively, you can visit some historical estates that are now open to the public.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Also known as Ulan Bator, this city is the capital of Mongolia, and thus, you could expect some vibrant sights and sounds as you explore. The city has a rich history preserved and you'll definitely find stunning landmarks such as the Chinggis Khan Square, Gandan Monastery and Zaisan Memorial. Museums as well as theatres (both in western and in traditional themes) also abound in this city.

Yekaterinburg, Russia

Yekaterinburg (or Ekaterinburg) is the fourth largest city of Russia. Check out the fine arts museum, circus, monuments, and ballet and opera theatres in the area. Or if you're up for it, you can also visit Ganina Yama or Church on the Blood, both of which have tragic background stories.
